frustration: elementary quasiparticles and many-particle bound states. Abstract The excitation spectrum of the two-chain S = 1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with additional second neighbor frustrating interactions is studied by a variety of techniques. A description, based on a mapping of the model onto a Bose gas of hard-core triplets is used to determine the one-and two-particle excitation spectra. We find that low-lying singlet and triplet bound states are present and their binding energy increases with increasing frustration. In addition, many-particle bound states are found by exact diagonalization and variational methods. We prove that the larger the number of bound particles the larger the binding energy. Thus the excitation spectrum has a complex structure and consists of elementary triplets and composite many-particle singlet and triplet bound states. The composite excitations mix strongly with the elementary ones in the coupling regime where quantum fluctuations are strong. The quantum phase transition, known to take place in this model at critical frustration is interpreted as a condensation process of (infinitely) large many-particle bound states.

An inelastic neutron scattering study was performed on a Zn-substituted spin-1/2 Heisenberg 2-leg ladder compound Sr(Cu1−xZnx)2O3 (x ≤ 0.04) to investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects on the quantum spin system with a large spin gap of about ∼ 400 K. The magnitude of the spin gap was found to be independent of Zn concentration, 33 meV, while the integrated magnetic scattering which corresponds...

Intermediate Spin and Quantum Critical Points, Etc. Typeset Using Revt E X

Unlike that of SO(3) or SU(2), the Lie algebra for SO(2), which defines intermediate spin, comprises only Sz and implies S ± commute. In general, Sz has a continuous spectrum. This intermediate spin scheme can realized for the low energy excitations of a wide class of large spin magnets. A magnetic field provides the necessary time reversal symmetry breaking and controls the effective value of ...

Magnetic phase diagram of the dimerized spin S = 1 2 ladder

The ground-state magnetic phase diagram of a spin S = 1/2 two-leg ladder with alternating rung exchange J⊥(n) = J⊥[1 + (−1) nδ] is studied using the analytical and numerical approaches. In the limit where the rung exchange is dominant, we have mapped the model onto the effective quantum sineGordon model with topological term and identified two quantum phase transitions at magnetization equal to...

Randomly Dilute Spin Models with Cubic Symmetry. Typeset Using Revt E X 1

We study the combined effect of cubic anisotropy and quenched uncorrelated impurities on multicomponent spin models. For this purpose, we consider the field-theoretical approach based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson φ4 Hamiltonian with cubic-symmetric quartic interactions and quenched randomness coupled to the local energy density. We compute the renormalization-group functions to six loops in th...

Bloch Oscillations of Magnetic Solitons in Anisotropic Spin-1/2 Chains Typeset Using Revt E X 1

We study the quantum dynamics of soliton-like domain walls in anisotropic spin-1/2 chains in the presence of magnetic fields. In the absence of fields, domain walls form a Bloch band of delocalized quantum states while a static field applied along the easy axis localizes them into Wannier wave packets and causes them to execute Bloch oscillations, i.e. the domain walls oscillate along the chain...
